… in the real world.
After my last post I received news that the guy who stepped in for me when I left my old function would be rotating back to his old function I knew I had a lot of work coming my way.
For the sake of argument, let’s call him Freddy.
Freddy as with the company as long as I am, 8 years now.
It’s a bit sad though, Freddy had some good qualities and an insight to my old function I sometimes neglected. Did things differently of course, but had a nasty habit of dwelling on every little detail that took him miles away from his endpoint. Come to think of it, Freddy did have a problem on putting the focus on the main issues at hand. I remember one time we had planned a meeting at 11. I had a demo that morning that, of course, ran longer than anticipated, so I was 30 min late. Freddy started discussing for 15 min that he didn’t like to wait every single time we had a meeting and that he only had ’till 12…so 15 min left on the clock.
I can go on with some more examples, but they are all colored. I look at them from my vantage point, with my beliefs and references.
Over the course of 8 years I’ve grown in my job, gathered experience and found a lot of resistance and God nows I’ve made errors. Never twice the same though. So I can say that every experience I’ve had made me stronger and wiser. And when I take everything into account, it’s a positive score card !
Freddy won’t be leaving the company I’m happy to say. Although we won’t be the best of friends, it would make me sad to see him leave.
